What Is the PR Pressure Chamber?
The PR Pressure Chamber is a live, Zoom-based crisis communications simulation designed to stress-test real decision-making under real-time pressure — not a lecture, and not a post-mortem case study. On this episode, Peter Woolfolk interviews Cheron Porter, APR, a crisis communications expert based in Charlotte, North Carolina, about how the exercise works and why it's built the way it is.
How Does the PR Pressure Chamber Training Work?
Participants receive a crisis scenario the night before, then join a live session where small teams must, in real time:
1. Draft stakeholder messaging under time pressure
2. Create a holding statement before all facts are confirmed
3. Make prioritization calls about what to address first
4. Adapt to new curveballs as facilitators introduce fresh complications mid-session
This format removes the two comforts traditional PR workshops usually allow: perfect hindsight and time to polish a response. Instead, it mirrors what a crisis communications team actually faces — fuzzy facts, a loud clock, and stakeholders demanding an answer immediately.
What Crisis Scenarios Does the Simulation Use?
Two example scenarios illustrate the range of the training:
• A sports crisis scenario: A women's basketball program heading to the Final Four faces rumors of leadership failures and favoritism, raising crisis PR questions about policy, privacy, and what a spokesperson should say on camera.
• A cybersecurity crisis scenario: A public organization is hit with a ransomware attack that threatens payroll, prompting a broader discussion of cybersecurity communications, internal messaging, social media listening, and backup communication tools for when Wi-Fi and phone systems go down.
Why This Conversation Matters for PR Professionals
For communicators who want sharper crisis communications skills, a repeatable crisis response checklist, and a stronger real-time decision-making mindset, this conversation with Cheron Porter offers practical, day-one-usable frameworks grounded in a simulation format rather than theory.
